Forest Park miracle

This unloved 1950's house on the eastern edge of Forest Park was in astonishingly bad condition and bought in foreclosure for the lot price. I helped the buyer re-imagine the house from a warren of ugly rooms into a modern, open showplace. The budget was very tight but we managed to create a gorgeous home.

The plan flows from living room to dining room to kitchen. The areas are distinguished by different ceiling treatments.

Doors throughout the house are simple slab birch doors that were stained dark brown-black with inexpensive modern door hardware. The doors were about the least expensive one can buy, but they were beautiful, adding so much character to the space.

The owner was familiar with the fanciful metal light fixtures that had long been in place in the downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus and used one here in the dining room.

The new kitchen was located in the old living room. Its interesting ceiling treatment was somewhat dictated by the structure of the house.

These new brick pedestals were built at the two corners of the projecting bedroom wing. The bricks were leftovers from removal of a barbecue pit that was so typical for the time.

The house had great lines with the deep eaves one might expect from a mid century modern but did not fulfill its potential when it came to windows and similar features.

Forest Park renovation

The house lives up to its potential with large casement windows in configurations that were typical of the era. One has the sense that the house was built this way. Note the new brick pedestals at the corners with modern concrete planters. These add much interest to the house.

The old kitchen was in the center of the public part of the house, chopping the plan into a series of unrelated spaces.

the condition of the house was deplorable.
